Not all Win 94s have large chambers that may result in overworked brass with multiple handloadings, but some do. The standard Ruger Redhawk can handle 45 Colt loads approaching 50Kpsi (even the Blackhawk has its limits!), but the question of "why" is one that needs to be addressed first.ĭitto what M'BOGO says on case life. Just throttle back in trying to turn them into 454 Casull loads. Use your RO loads with confidence in a Model 94AE. And if that isn't enough, I also reference that Brian Pearce, one of my favorite handloading writers of all time, has written of this subject many times and agrees that both the Win 94 and Marlin 1895 are not only completely within their margin of safety with RO loads in 45 Colt but can handle them without any dire consequences to their longevity. Not so in a Model 92 which has much stronger locking lugs because of their design. and considering bolt head thrust may be a bit too much for the 94s locking lug mechanism. That cartridge operates at much higher pressures in commercial loadings than the RO loads. The comparison to 454 Casull is not accurate.
Even if one considers bolt head thrust (a term you usually hear applied more to T/C Contenders when using them with over factory spec loads), they are easily able to handle RO loads. Ruger loads are generally limited to 32Kpsi, well within the range of 44 Mag pressures and that of rifle cartridges it has been chambered in for over a century. That 300gr XTP with 21.5gr WW296 is a great load, btw. It still shoots around 2" groups at 100 yds with its 2.5x Redfield. I have a Trapper I have been shooting my Ruger only loads in for about 15 years now. The Win 94AE can easily handle "Ruger Only" loads.
